Toledo Edison’s 2020 Tree Trimming to Enhance Service Reliability

AKRON, Ohio, June 16, 2020 / PRNewswire / – Toledo Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), performs pruning and other vegetation management work in communities in the Northwest Ohio Service area to improve service reliability for customers. The work helps maintain proper clearances around electrical equipment, which can reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, especially during severe weather such as the numerous storms last winter.

Since the beginning of the year, tree contractors in the Toledo Edison service area have cut more than 825 kilometers of electrical wiring as part of the almost $ 7.3 million Vegetation management program for 2020, with an additional 1,200 miles to be completed by the end of the year.

“Felling trees is one of the most important and effective things we do every year to maintain and protect our electrical system,” he said Rich Sweeney, Regional President, Toledo Edison. “This work pays off year-round when there is less disruption, especially during severe storms that can cause tremendous damage to trees, which in turn can damage our equipment.”

The felling of trees will be carried out this year in the following municipalities:

  • Clyde
  • In spite of
  • delta
  • Fayette
  • Fremont
  • Gibsonburg
  • Lyon
  • Monclova
  • Oregon
  • Pemberville
  • Toledo
  • White House
  • Woodville

The pruning takes place every four years. The program includes inspecting the vegetation near the lines to ensure that the trees are pruned in a way that preserves the health of the tree while maintaining safety around electrical facilities. Trees that are dangerous or sick can be removed.

As part of the notification process, Toledo Edison works with municipalities to inform them of tree pruning plans. In addition, customers living in areas with rights of way will be notified prior to the completion of vegetation management work.

Vegetation management work is carried out by certified forest professionals under the direction of the company, including: Arbormetics Solutions; Asplundh Tree Expert Company; Nelson Tree Service Inc .; and PennLine Service.
