FORT WAYNE, IND. (WANE) – Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) announced in a press release that a helicopter will be used on Wednesday to cut trees around transmission lines in parts of northern Indiana.

Trimming takes place on weekdays and Saturdays until the end of October from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting. Counties on the map include Counties Allen, DeKalb, Noble, Kosciusko, Elkhart, Whitley, Huntington, Grant, Wabash, and Wells.

“The job is routine maintenance to remove overhanging branches that can affect the reliability of the service and pose potential security risks,” the press release said.

I&M said they hired Aerial Solutions Inc. for this project and the helicopter used was white with blue and yellow trim with the tail number N53846, the news release said.

I&M said in the press release that the tree pruning tool is suspended under the helicopter from a vertical boom that has several chainsaw blades attached to it. The helicopter flies at tree height while the pruning work is in progress.

“Airborne trimming is faster and easier to reach areas away from roads than traditional tree-trimming crews with ground equipment,” the press release said.
